This is the tournament which replaced AvalonCon after the demise of Avalon Hill immediately following the convention last year. This tournament took place in large part through the efforts of Don Greenwood who ran the convention and of Alan Applebaum, SGS member and Chairman of the Board for the Boardgame Players Association (BPA) which is now running the WBC. Alan Applebaum, Dave Finberg, Aaron Fuegi, Chuck Krueger and Jung Yueh of the SGS attended and everyone had a great time. Alan, Dave, Aaron and Jung went as a team representing the SGS and tied for 1st place in the team tournament. Alan Applebaum won the Victory in the Pacific tournament, confirming his #1 ranking. Jung Yueh won the Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage tournament in a close game against James Pei - this game was recorded and will likely appear later as a 'series replay'. The club again did well at Multiplayer Titan with its three competitors Jung Yueh, Dave Finberg and Aaron Fuegi all reaching the semifinals and Aaron making it to the finals, which were won by David des Jardins, an MIT alum. Dave Finberg finished second in a close game at Titan2. Attendance this year was strong despite the loss of Avalon Hill and this almost certainly means the WBC will continue for years to come.
AvalonCon 98Alan Applebaum, Dave Finberg, Aaron Fuegi, Pablo Garcia, Michael Johnson, Chuck Krueger and Jung Yueh of the SGS attended and everyone had a great time. Alan, Dave, Aaron and Chuck went as a team representing the SGS and finished 16th of 66 teams with all but one of the team scoring at least one point in his tournament event. Jung Yueh had the best tournament, finishing 1st at Multiplayer Titan, 2nd at Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage and 4th at Titan2. The club was fairly dominant in fact at Multiplayer Titan with its three main competitors Jung Yueh, Dave Finberg and Aaron Fuegi all reaching the semifinals, winning their games and making it to the finals and finishing 1-2-3. The other finalist was David des Jardins who is an MIT alum and finished 4th. All three also did well at Titan2, finishing in the top 8. Unfortunately, the day after our return Hasbro purchased Avalon Hill. This leaves an AvalonCon '99 in grave doubt and cast a very gray cloud over the future of AH games.
TNT 97Dave Finberg and Aaron Fuegi attended the 1997 Titan National Tournament in Maryland. We drove down together on Wednesday to be there for the convention's start on Thursday but broke down off Rt 84 in New York. This delay ended up costing us 24 hours and we barely were able to find a hotel room. However, we eventually arrived late Thursday and played one game before heading to Aaron's father's house to crash for the night. We both had a very good time and after the first game, Dave seemed almost unable to lose, winning almost every game he played. Until Dave and Aaron met in a full-length game in the semi-finals of the two-player event, Dave had won his prior two-player games in a total of under 15 minutes. Dave ended up winning both the multi-player and two-player events and Aaron reached the semifinals in both events. A friend of Aaron's who had come down seperately came by the hotel on Sunday and we all three drove back to Boston. -Aaron
AvalonCon 97Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 10:26:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Krueger(SGS Secretary) To: sgs-members@MIT.EDU Subject: Avaloncon report As some of you may know, several members of our club attended Avaloncon last week. It was a very succesful con for the SGS. Dave Finberg and Aaron Fuegi both reached the final round of the 4-player Titan tournament. Dave won and Aaron took second place. Marty Sample reached the final round of Hannibal in a single elimination format tournament. He finished in second place. Pablo Garcia and I won a decisive axis victory in the first round of the Advanced Third Reich tournament. We lost the final round in a close match. Alan Applebaum, the top ranked Victory in the Pacific player, faced a tough field in the VITP tournament. He finished with a record of 5-2, placing in the top 5. Alan also placed in the top 5 in the War at Sea tournament. Overall this was an excellent showing for the SGS. Congratulations to everyone involved.
