Thanks to Jenny Gutbezahl for originally writing up these instructions, which I, Aaron Fuegi, have now edited somewhat.
This is Google's browser and you may well already have it on your machine, if not, you can download it here: https://www.google.com/chrome/ It's free.
If you don't have an account, you can get one here: https://www.netflix.com/ It is not free, and the cost will depend on the level of account you want. That's a decision you need to make
As of late December 2020, we are also now sometimes using HBOMax and Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Prime Video does not require the TeleParty app but the other two services do.Once you have Chrome installed, you need to install teleparty, which you can get here. https://www.netflixparty.com/ It is free.
If Teleparty is properly installed, when you open the Chrome browser, you'll see a little TP on the status bar up top; this will be there whether you're on the Netflix/HBOMax page or not, but won't do much if you're not on one of these (don't worry about the other icons you see next to it; these are for other apps I have installed, mostly for work). See the little icon circled in red in Jenny's screenshot below. The icon has changed a bit to be a Tp instead of Np.
When Susie or Aaron posts the link on Friday night at around 7:45pm Eastern time and you click on it, it will take you to the Netflix/HBOMax page for that movie, click on the TP icon in your status bar and you should join the party. For HBOMax watches, you need to first click on the Play button for the movie and then click the TP icon. There will be a chat window on the right you can chat in and the movie will be on the left. Aaron will start the movie right around 7:30PM Eastern and will plan to simply let it play the whole way through.
You can adjust your name and icon for the chat by clicking on the icon in the upper right of the main part of your browser window to the far right of where the movie is playing.
Q: Can I watch the movie on my TV?
Yes, but the source needs to be your computer with the Chrome broswer running. We then run an HDMI cable from the computer to our large TV and it displays fine. We also need to adjust the audio output to use the tv, doing this.
Q: I am having trouble. What should I do?
You can ask in the Facebook thread about the movie or you can call or text Aaron or Susie and we will try to help. We don't mind being interrupted for a minute to try to help you get it working or we could try to work through it with you during the week for the next Friday.
Rebooting one's computer has also helped a number of people as has just keeping trying. The instructions above are correct but it seems like the extension is a bit flaky. If you keep trying, you probably will be able to get in.
Q: I am using a Mac and want to broadcast to my Apple TV. Can I?
Yes, you can use AirPlay to mirror your Mac display to your TV or use it as a second display. In either case, the TV will take over the audio.
