Flash Game

This Flash game/puzzle, Desktop Tower Defense, is excellent and immediately addictive. If you don't have a bunch of time on your hands, I recommend you NOT check it out. Link from Kottke.

Pretty neat at first, but once I realized the careful timing that would be needed for high scores, I got less enthusiastic.

(Hint: it looks like the biggest trick is to buy and sell towers at key spots to get the creeps to run back and forth and never get out.)

I agree with your hint and think probably it is best to just not allow oneself to do that. It does seem that there is some time limit on this too, on the final boss towers eventually stopped firing for me and he got away but probably that only applies at the very end. I think the analyzing the right maze to build, the right mix of towers comprising it, and the right order to build it all in is pretty interesting.

Here's a shareware game along the same lines, perhaps slightly more polished (or not---I haven't tried it yet): Master of Defense

This seems like a direct derivative of the Flash game, maybe by the same author?

I don't think it is by the same people. There appear to be a ton of these type of games. Some guy's Top 5 list of them.

The site the original creators run is apparently http://www.casualcollective.com/.
