You have entered the Last Homely House's Hall of Excellence
This Hall is devoted to recognizing excellence on the Web. Pages
and services are listed which show the potential of the Web being
realized. The authors of these pages have ignored the obvious
limitations of the Web and achieved things which others would not have
thought possible. All possible thanks and congratulations are owed to
these WWW Pioneers. Many of these sites are listed because of their
historical importance in the early days of the web.
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE (Taking HTML and the WWW to their limits!)
- MapQuest Incredibly detailed
and comprehensive. Find streets, businesses, travel directions, Web sites,
restaurants, ... throughout the USA. Amazing. Nowadays I more often use Google Maps but MapQuest was first by a mile.
- Cool Site of the Day
After years of picking cool sites, the
previous cool sites
list includes most of the Interesting, Unusual and Fun sites around
(including this one).
- Google An absolutely amazing search
engine. Far better than any other I have used.
- The Nine Planets, by Bill Arnett
An incredible repository of images, sounds, text and more on all the planets,
moons and more in our Solar System. All the material is fully hyperlinked and
cross-referenced.
- Astronomy Picture of the Day Gorgeous image with explanation every day.
HOME PAGES
MISCELLANEOUS
- Comics: Dr. Fun and The Dilbert Zone
Dr. Fun has been on the Web since the beginning (finally ended in 2006 after 13 years of strips) and it is great of Scott Adams to make Dilbert available this way.
- WiReD Magazine - My favorite magazine for years.
- Robert Hartill's Movie Server
Detailed, searchable and useful and that's just a start. Also deserves special
credit for how early it was started. The official name is now "The Internet
Movie Database".
- Le WebLouvre
An Incredible art exhibition on the Web.
- The Lurker's
Guide to Babylon 5, imho, in recent years, by far the best science fiction
on television. This Web site is incredibly comprehensive.
