Lesson Plan 8

Digital Media in Virtual Environments

Lesson Title

Digital media in virtual environments

Duration

3 classes (4.5 hours)

Synopsis

An introduction to digital images and audio and their uses in 3-dimensional computer graphics.

Description of Class

This lesson gives an introduction to the use of digital media.

The students will learn how and why digital images are used in 3-dimensional computer graphics, and delves into texture mapping in computer graphics.

Digital images are explained as 2-dimensional arrays of colored pixels.  A pixel is defined as a triple of numbers representing red, green, and blue intensity values.

The aspect ratio of an image is defined and discussed.

The basic paradigm of texture mapping is explained. Examples are given of mapping textures in various orientations onto a variety of polygon-based models.

The students are introduced to a software tool to map their own images, created in Corel, into a pre-defined virtual world.

The students use a related tool to attach sound files to objects in the virtual world.

Primary Educational Objective

Overview of digital media in VR

Digital images as arrays

The concept of texture maps in computer graphics

Students’ use of their images in a VR world

Additional Concepts and Skills

Digital media as mathematical objects

Digital media as data structures

Digital image manipulation

Geometric models in 3 dimensions

Use a variety of computational models (e.g. mental arithmetic, paper and   pencil, technological tools)

Describe the concept of a graph of a function

Translate among tabular, symbolic, and graphical representations of functions

Represent and analyze relationships using written and verbal expressions, tables, equations, and graphs

Assessment

Classroom participation and homework assignment.

Classroom Activities

Work with images to get direct experience with the aspect ratio.  Map their images into a virtual world.
