Lesson Plan 5.b

Sound and Digital Audio – Part 2

Lesson Title

Sound and Digital Audio – Part 2

Duration

1 class (1.5 hours)

Synopsis

This class covers analog and digital sound reproduction, and sound in virtual reality (VR).

Description of Class

After a general introduction to sound and hearing in Part 1, students are given more detail about concepts such as timbre, pitch and noise (with audio examples played, as appropriate).  A short history of analog recording/reproduction is given.

The distinction between analog and digital recording/reproduction is discussed in some depth.  Digital audio concepts covered include: analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, sampling rate, word size, and quantization.

Students are then  introduced to sound in VR.  A demonstration is given of a VR world (e.g., Terpsichore’s Haunt). Students learn about features of the DAFFIE soundserver such as sound localization and Internet telephony, and are given examples of VR sound usage (e.g., sound effects, music, ambient sound, live audio, etc.).
