Synopsis

This segment provides an orientation to the class; establishes the course requirements and expectations; and introduces the students to the various technologies that will be used throughout the course.

Description of Class

This section provides an orientation to the class and the project for the students. The background on the project and its funding through the NSF BPC program is presented.

 

One of the unique features of the class is its use of the Access Grid (AG) video conferencing to tie the local classroom to the other, remote participants. This technology is briefly described and the participants at the remote sites are introduced. In turn the students are asked to introduce themselves and briefly describe their interests.

An overview of the class materials is presented. A syllabus for the semester is distributed and discussed. The expectations of the students in the class are discussed.

 

In the second part of this lesson the students are given a demonstration of a distributed virtual world using the DAFFIE virtual reality software and the Deep Vision Display Wall. The 3D (stereoscopic) features of the display are briefly discussed. Various features of the virtual world, such as animation triggering, localized sound and avatars, are demonstrated and described. The students are shown how to use the navigation controls and each student is given the opportunity to “drive”.
