How to time your work

  >> tic  % starts a stopwatch timer  
  >> % your MATLAB operations ...    
  >> toc % reads a stopwatch timer  

The above sequence prints the elapsed (wallclock) time, in seconds, for processing the operations between tic and toc. There are other timers: etime, cputime, clock.
