Introduction to VSS
- "Virtual Sound Server" (a.k.a., "Vanilla Sound Server")
- Developed at NCSA by Robin Bargar, et al.
- Designed for networked use (i.e., notion of "sound client").
- Provides several realtime synthesis methods (e.g., additive, granular,
FM, physical modeling) as well as sample file playback.
- Supports MIDI I/O.
- ASCII files for sound descriptions, reducing need for recompilation.
- Currently runs on SGI, but is being ported to Windows (95, 98, NT) and Linux.
- Numerous CAVE applications require VSS.
- Amplitude-panning localization for up to eight speakers.
