Tape Archive Mass Storage Facility
Description
Archive is a utility for archiving files and directories to the IBM Distributed Storage Manager (tape robot mass storage).
Availability
Archive is available on all of our large system machines and can be run from twister.bu.edu.
SCV is now providing access to Information Technology's mass storage system running IBM's ADSM software. The mass storage is intended for the long term archiving of large files rather than for regular backups; for example archiving the contents of one's /project, /projectnb, /project2, /projectnb1, or /projectnb2 directory. Users have complete control over the archiving and restoration of files. There is no need to contact an operator for restoration operations.
To get started, simply type
twister% archive /path/mydirectory
and the contents of /path/mydirectory including all subdirectories will be written to tape. You can verify this with the command
twister% archive -query /path/mydirectory
Using the query option to find a desired file, you may then restore it with a command like
twister% archive -retrieve /path/mydirectory/myfile /tmp
which will restore myfile to /tmp/mydirectory/myfile . You may also restore entire directories and directory trees.
See here for a more detailed description of the use of the archive command.
