Artist's Statement:

Carlton Newton writes of his work that he "would like to develop a language of sculptural form in which time and motion can enter into the life of the piece with the same ease and authority as do the cultural references of image, and the physicality of object." Using movable template systems fabricated in wood, sheet metal, or forged steel, Mr. Newton manipulates fluid gypsum cement to sweep out volumetric masses in space. His invention of systems and their operations gives rise to complex and unpredictable sculptural forms. The metaphors that emerge in these works derive from the record of movement, the logic of cause and effect, and the kinesthetic components of gesture.
