On Tuesday, Sept. 26, the BGL system software will be updated
from driver V1R2M1 to driver V1R3M0. The update will begin at 10:00am
and will take a few hours.

Note on Compilers:
As we announced previously, the new IBM XL compilers (XL C/C++ v8.0
and XL Fortran v10.1) will replace the old ones (XL C/C++ v7.0
and XL Fortran v9.1) as part of this software update. Although old
binaries will continue to run on the updated system you should
recompile your applications in order to take advantage of compiler
improvements. Be aware that there are incompatibilities between the
old driver and the new driver so when you recompile, you must recompile
ALL object files and libraries, you can't just relink.

Even though the old compilers are incompatible with the new driver
it will still be possible to compile with the old compilers and the
old driver and run on the new system. So if you need to do this,
send email to help@twister.bu.edu for instructions.

Note on Libraries:
As stated above, all libraries must be recompiled. I number of
libraries are installed in /bgl/local including several versions of
FFTW. We plan to update only those packages which are actually being used.
FFTW is used and will be updated. If you are using anything
else in /bgl/local let us know so we can update it.

Note on ESSL:
The currently installed version of ESSL (4.2.2) is incompatible
with the new driver and will be removed from the system. We are
still trying to obtain the new compatible version but it may take
a few more weeks. Please let us know if you use ESSL.
