Subject: SCF downtime: August 22, 10:00am - noon

On Tuesday, Aug. 22, all SCF systems (Twister, et al, the Linux
Cluster, and the Blue Gene) will be down for a 2 hour maintenance
beginning at 10:00am.

During this time, we will update system software and compilers on the
IBM/AIX/pSeries machines.

The major software components that will change are:

 component old version new version
       AIX 5.2 ML6+ 5.2 ML9
      XL C 7.0 8.0
    XL C++                  7.0           8.0
XL Fortran 9.1 10.1
PE (aka MPI) 4.2 4.2.2

There are also updates to ESSL and PESSL but their versions don't change.

Please see http://hotwheels.bu.edu:5312/help/index.jsp for detailed
information about changes to the compilers.

Since the maintenance window is short and there is a lot of work to
do, we will actually perform the software updates on some of the batch
machines during the week prior to the scheduled downtime. Since the new
software is backward compatible with the old software we don't expect
this to cause any problems. If you do notice anything unusual, please let
us know as soon as possible.

Please send questions and report problems to bugs@twister.bu.edu.
